Thuramukham, Review.

Thuramukham, one of the most awaited film from Rajiv Ravi, tells about, Lives of innocent illiterate people of Mattanchery, their exploitations and revolutionary movements which results in a firing incident that killed many ,way back in the year 1953.

Plot.

The film starts by using black and white frames to narrate the story of a local muslim man named Maimood (Joju thomas). Maimood and his neighbours are headload workers in Cochin shipyard where they follow a distinctive work culture called Chaappa system under which Chappa is a token of permission that must be posessed by a worker to take part in loading and unloading activities in Cochin shipyard. This chappa coins are issued by an authority named as Mooppan along with a middleman, Pacheekka. As the Chappa system is extremely exploitative, workers and their family were leaving in extreme poverty. Maimood who revolted against the system got murdered by the men in power.

When the film picks up the color frames, the timeline assumed to be mid Ninteenth century. Maimood's two sons played by Nivin pauly and Arjun Ashokan, Darshana Rajendran as his daughter. Poornima indrajith plays the role of maimood's wife in both the timelines. When the story progress, the elder son, Nivin pauly is portrayed as an irresponsible man who go behind women and wine. Younger son is  genuine and taking care of the family by working under the exploitative chappa regime. The mass mobilisation against the Chappa regime, organising capacity of workers, their political empowerment that brewed in mysteries and poverty are all plunged into the second part. These elements makes the film emotionaly hooked with vehemently added leftist ideologies and slogans that gives the film its midas touch in the climax.

Positives.

The film is a brilliant blend of hero centrality, realism, comedy,  drama, history and politics there by it managed to assimilate the ingredients of a commercial entertainer, keeping it's artistic values untouched.

Actors are one on one better as they makes frame to frame progress in the depth of the respective roles. Joju George effortlessly played as Maimood and Poornima indrajith outclassed all the actors by giving her best in both of the timelines. Nivin pauly, Arjun Ashokan, Nimisha, and other supporting actors were also good and apt.

Technically, cinematography  and art direction deserves louder claps. The port of Cochi, Mattanchery and the underprivileged lives of innocent people, their lives, poverty, Markets, livelihood, culture etc are well depicted in the film by recreating almost all such factors artificially.

2 hrs and 54 minutes didn't make the film lagging neither boring. Its well scripted with detailed character imprints for all the important characters.

The film managed to uphold the secular principles though the matters discussed can have a communal angle if it's perceived in that sense.

Inclusion of Jewish community, depiction of some traditions, mentioning the Syphilis infection as 'Kappal' ,Chaappa regime, reference to five year plans of Nehru, paradigm ideological shift of Congress party in mid 19 the century..

Negatives.

The film will not allow you to realise the timeline at which the story goes. The time, culture, lifestyle and labour customs shown in the film may not be easily sensible to all the audience.

Rating.

9/10.
