BEAST, Film Review
Beast, is a Nelson cum Vijay film in all its form. When Situational comedies in serious plots are tried to thread along the star power of vijay, we would expect a cocktail of perfect commercial entertainer, but beast couldn't give out what it offered.
PLOT.
Story structured as a hostage drama when terrorists hijacked an EAST COAST mall in chennai to bargain the release of their leader named Umar khalif from indian prison. Veera Raghavan (vijay) also trapped inside the mall, is actually a RAW agent who suffers from a psychological damage after an earlier incident in indo-pak border when he accidentally killed a child during a short range missile attack. He emerges as a savior of civilians from hostage meanwhile the terrorist leader got released from india by the government on negotiations. Veera raghavan manages to go to pakistan chasing the terrorist leader and bring him back to india after destroying the terrorists camp.
POSITIVES.
Action sequences are well choreographed and neatly captured in the reels, with pulsating score from Anirudh.
Two songs "Arabi kutthu" and "jolly on jimkhana were visually colorful with lavish exhibition of stardom and dance, and also musically thrilling to follow.
Though the film don't have much screen space for romance, Pooja hegde and Vijay seems suitable and comfortable at each other.
Nelson's way of humour additives In tough situations worked really well in some instances. When the negotiator tells the terrorists "You Hijack the mall properly and then call me," that would really make us all laugh. Similar, innocent humour was very enjoyable.
Beast, unlike the other films tried to prorogue the extraordinary actions like the hero flying fighter jets, blasting the floor at standoffs etc..
Few political backstabbers like quoting dassault rafale fighter aircarfts and sukoi fighter jets have it's double dimensions as well.
NEGATIVES.
The basis of major loopholes in the film is that neither Nelson tries to challenge Vijay's stardom, nor Vijay tried to demand his safe zone. So, the outcome looks like an imperfect solution with lots of undissolved solutes.
Film buried three basic doctrines of Emotions, Logic, and Gravity(sometimes) and tried to project lots of unnecessary situations that could only stretch the time with no commendable impact. This problem is very evident when hostages are behaving quite normally without any fear or anxiety as if they are waiting for the final whistle to go out. Terrorists in the film appeared more loyal and decent compared to our HERO who is comparatively more violent.
There were lots of failed attempts to spark comedy but that could mostly belittled the gravity of a hostage situation.
When Pakistani airforce tries to shot down the Fighter jet when it encroaches on their airspace , in a way make the whole sequence a state sponsored terrorism, that's not just criticising the terrorists but the nation as whole. It's not a welcome approach towards international relations.
In a hostage situation, bargaining and negotiating tactics could have played huge role but Beast never explored that area much.
RATING : Am giving 5/10 and recommend the film as one time watchable
