Ponniyin Selvan, Review
Ponniyin selvan is a period drama that tells about the mighty chola empire, that ruled over major part of south india and neighbouring areas in both ancient, medieval phases of history. The film is a visual adaption of the novel written by a tamil writer named kalki, 70 years back.
Plot.
Sundara chola ( Prakash Raj) rules the vast chola empire with his feudatories and his two sons Aditha Karikala ( Vikram) and Arulmozhi/ Ponniyin selvan ( Jayam Ravi). He also have one daughter named Kundavai ( Trisha). The empire was getting constant threat from their rivals pandyas and faces espionage from their feudatories as well. Aditha karikala is desperado turned warrior after he lost his love interest named Nandini ( Aiswarya rai) who is passionately waiting to ascend the thrown of the queen. He send his messenger named Vanthiyadevan (Karthi) to know what's happening in their Thanjavore palace as Karikala was ruling little more southwest.
Inorder to take decision on the succession of thrown, Sundara chola was advised by his feudatories to call upon his two sons Aditha karikala and Arulmozhi. Meanwhile, Arulmozhi/ Ponniyin selvan got attacked by Pandyas as he fight his best but sink down to the deep sea.
POSITIVES.
The film is visually rich with grandiose exhibition of ancient Royal world. Cinematography and Art are brilliant in each frames that delivers the might and pride of one of the long lasted kingdoms of the world.
Script is written with lots of mysterious elements and intentionally silenced detailing to set the perfect track for the second part.
Casting looked perfect so the performance too. Aiswarya rai and Trisha will never allow one to stare away. They both impressively weaponised their exquisite beauty in every scenes they come in. Vikram, Karthi, Jayaram, Prakash Raj and Jayam Ravi were also looked perfect in this costume drama.
Background score and visual effects pumped the last sequence to the next level.
NEAGATIVES.
The film quickly introduce characters one after the other but failed to provide details and interconnections so that the audience may feel the film like an unsloved jigsaw puzzle with some missing slots.
Some important scenes in the film appeared confusing as the plot shifts from one palace to another palace without much characteristic change in the environment.
Introducing the title character in the second half, had failed to provide enough time to get familiarised with the protagonist Ponniyin selvan.
Songs couldn't make much impact in par with the visuals.
RATING.
Am giving 6/10 for this film. Its not a Bahubali kind of action, neither agressive like Game of Thrones, nor witty like Pirates of Caribbean. But It looked good in its own ways..
