ODIYAN(ഒടിയൻ), malayalam movie review

Dissection of the film odiyan seems to be little hard as everone may have their own versions of myths and predictions. So,i may kindle the fire to your wax-house if you didn't watch the film.. Readers please forgive me for the same..

PLOT.

Odiyan narrates in two different timelines that alternatively shown without making an attempt to tell the story with regular flashback style. It starts when maanikan escapes a lady who was drowning to death as her sari got twisted around the turban of a boat in gangetic shore of varanasi. The lady is a native of thenkurusi, from where maanikyan was exiled 15 years ago. The lady tells the secrets about two mysterious murders happened in thenkurusi,for the same maanikyan was blamed. 

The movie shifts its timeline that rolls the reel 15years backwards  when maanikyan was doing household jobs and a witchcraft of transfigurations into different animals. As he was in close with Prabha ,the character played by manju varrier, the Ravunni(Prakash raj), an upperclass fudal fail to fulfill his ravenous sexual appetite for Prabha and his sister. As both these ladies got married, Ravunni kills both of their husbands, similarising the advents of odiyan and blames manikkyan for the same. Following all these incidents, manikkyan makes his Exodus from thenkurushi. 

When he got to know the mysteries behind these murders from the lady in varanasi, who was once the hustler of Raavunni, maanikkyan comes back to thenkurushi for taking his revenge by killing Raavunni amidst a paddy field  and then reunite with his old love Prabha..

POSITIVES.

The best part of the film is the dramatic performance of Mohanalal with two different get-ups ,one as a pagentary charismatic youth and the other as a vip-van-winkle.

Manju varrier also shown her complete commitment to the character, as a youthful lady with energising valour and as a matured women who registers every demanded emotions..

I clinically admire each frames, background score and the song "kondovaam".

A well detailed script that theorise the plot without disturbing any folklore and belief system also deserves special mention. 

NEAGATIVES.

Three hours could have trimmed little shorter so that the film will be sensibly faster in second half.

Witchcraft and wizardry behind the traditional beliefs of odiyan could have been added as fictious elements of glitters in the plot for moulding the plot more cinematic.

The movie is in a slow pace except the fights as it stumbles to theorise the story further more,due to that, the melodrama overshadows the curious and furious eyes of audience.

Am giving 8/10 for this dramatic action thriller and tells you all that ODIYAN is NOT A FANTACY FABLE...
