SARDAR UDDHAM (Movie Review)
"Sardar uddham" is one of the classic historical film that must be watched by everyone in present scenario as India turns more into a land of parochial nationalism ,deviating from its enriched pluralism.
Plot.
The core of the story is the assassination of General O Dwyer, a british lieutenant who was in charge of Jallianwallabagh massacre in 1919. This darkest hours of indian freedom struggle ignites the vengeance among lots and one among such was Sardar uddham. Uddham travels to England multiple times with varying identities and does many odd jobs for livelihood. He tries to get connected with others who works secretly with leftist ideologies and seek help from them. After 21 years of his self-suppressed Revenge ,Finally, he execute General O Dwyer in 1940 and succumbed to death sentence by hanging..
COMMENTS.
This 163 minutes of unsung History is a political brilliance from the entire team as they could tell their view points without lynching other opposing arguments and ideologies on the same. They could even justify one of the historical debate against leftwingers that they didn't involved in active participation against Britain as the Big brother of communist nations at that time was Russia, was an ally of Britain.. But the film makes its politics quite open by establishing the Russian communist's back channel support to the revolutionary movements against British imperialism.. The film is filled with the concepts of Equality, Justice, Patriotism, and voices against Imperialism, Slavery and Oppression.
Screenplay attempted a different style of narration as it jumps back and forth of the timeline with multiple flashbacks amidst. Though the assassination of Dwyer has shown in in 27th minutes but his trail and punishment in 150th minute. This narrative style finely helped the film to go in detail about various incidence that registers uddam singhs political views..
Artworks were amusingly colonial with historic perfections in detailing. Be it the city of London and the streets of Amritsar, everything shown, underlines the British era of Royal whitemen and innocent indians. BGM , Cinematography and casting were all best suited the film both in emotionally challenging scenes as well as artistically enriched shots. Bluish Color tone in England, and a brownish tint to the city of Amrthsar was also a good visual experiment for a historical film of this genre...
When those who govern this country attempts to rewrite our own histories, films as an Artform must take the responsibility to put checkmates , like uddam singh precisely did with a sense of absolute political correctness...
Am giving 9/10 for this Gem, and the rest one point gives upto all those who were willfully succumbed to martyrdom...
