Wonder women, Review.
Wonder women, is a story of six pregnant women who come to an antenatal counseling centre named Sumana, run by Nandita(Nadiya moidu). As they become so close during the course of their session, the story delves into their lives more deeply. Their backgrounds, character, anxieties and inhibitions during their antenatal period is the story all about.
Positives.
1) It's a women's world and their problems that's most likely to be seen in every family. It reflects the pregnancy period of ladies who are from diverse backgrounds, an urban girl, educated but restricted woman, a hippy vocalist, and an aged woman. It also register men's attitude towards their pregnant wives and tries to fix some social stereotype as well.
2) Though the story didn't crave for a perfect climax, its warm, positive and managed the issues addressed by, with a promising end.
3) It's informative in some medical and legal aspects. The fact that The position of delivery is adopted for the convenience of examining doctors, and legal backup to accompany the pregnant women by her closed one, may be a new knowledge to so many people.
4)Inspite of being a lecture on emotional aspect of pregnancy, it include sisterhood, positivity, helpfulness, and empathy.
WHEN the aged man says to his wife "it's you more important than the child", WHEN Saya after a fight with her boyfriend says " what you are made up with man?",
WHEN Veni's mother in law asks "is it my child or your child"
WHEN Veni says " India have two official language, but there is no national language" - All these scenes are socially, emotionally and politically relevant.
5) Its not strictly a Malayalam film. It can be considered as universal as the concept and the language is chosen for international audience.
Negatives.
1) More than 95% of the dialogues are in English, it may not be engaging to all sections of Malayalam audience.
2) Counseling sessions that repeatedly talks of women empowerment that glorifies pregnancy and motherhood, may feel like a real counseling than a film. It's not much cinematically but realistically scripted.
3) So many gestures, looks, and depictions may be more convincing for women but not so for men.
4) It didn't try to settle all the issues it hinted. The story of Mini(Parvaty) and Nandita (Nadiya moidu) may feel sidelined.
Rating.
Am giving 8/10 for this WONDERFUL film and especially suggest every couples to watch it.
