Chup, the revenge of an artist. Review
Chup, the revenge of an artist is a thriller cum romantic drama. It tells about an agonised film maker who take his revenge on film critics, as he is of the opinion that, criticism now a days is killing the film industry.
Plot.
The story goes parallelly when a young lady named Nila,an aspiring film enthusiast meets a florist(Danny) in the city and on the other side, four film critics were brutally tortured and killed. The dead bodies are found to be rated with stars on their forehead and the police investigate this crime by looking on every piece of information they can collect. Analysing the targets and intention of the killer, Police then make a trap by forcing Nila to write a bad review about a well- acclaimed film. The serial killer chases her to kill her but caught by the police meanwhile.
As the film is basically a straight line narrative, the role of Danny makes it all the difference. He is confused, irritated, and psychotic on one side, with severe childhood trauma and shattered aspirations, but on the other side, he is very lovely and a perfect attractive urban romantic guy. Danny is the culprit and the silent viewer. He is complex and simple. He is very childish with his self talks but extremely tough with his intentions.
Positive.
The film is a thriller story that's been told in a new set up. "Jo star dene wale ko star dethehe " is a kind of modern day diagnosis.
Casting was perfect in case of leading characters like Dulquir salmon, and Shreya dhanwantary, Saranya ponvannan (Nilas mother) and Sunny deol as the Investigating officer.
Mumbai rains, the streets, evenings, beaches, urbanisation, lifestyle, are all well sweeped on the screen giving a realtime experience. Despite of making Mumbai with a dark -golden medieval palate, this film assured a sense of Nila( blue) streets, is well satisfying both for a cold blood murder and filmy romance.
Negatives.
Though it's a thriller, the movie didn't goes that way. It never compel you to think, guess and doubt something. It clearly hints killer in many occasions, so that the audience don't feel much surprises. The thrilling part is that we know the target and shooter, but what happens in between.
In the storyline, justifications for the crimes the protagonist commits is not felt so strong. Execution of such a high-profile murders are shown as so easy. Be it in an apartment , in a railway track, in an open ground. These killing spots according to the scripts of film review, can be noticed by lots of people if he is not well planned. So, it felt little illogical.
Rating.
I am giving 8/10 for Chup, and quote the last question of Nila. "Nobody liked your film?? you too?? Then kill yourself first.."
